The 4 Fundamental Kinds of Begonia
Begonias can bloom for extended periods and require little upkeep. Several cultivars are appreciated for their lovely leaves while having less striking flowers. They can bloom for weeks at a time in the season, from late summer to late autumn. Depending on the kind, they can bloom continuously when kept indoors. There is a time of dormancy for tuberous begonias when the blooms and foliage wither away for a few weeks. Yet, certain begonia species can bloom continuously throughout the year. There are hundreds of cultivars in the huge and diverse genus Begonia. Landscaping contractors classify plants into four fundamental categories based on the structure of their roots: tuberous, fibrous, hardy, and rhizomatous.
Tuberous Begonias
These begonias’ “roots” are spherical, meaty tubers. In areas with colder climates, they are lifted and stored for the winter after being planted in containers as annuals in the early spring. These fluffy flowers come in a variety of vivid and pastel hues (red, yellow, orange, pink, and white), as well as the striking “Picotee” type, which has petals with delicate scarlet edging.
Fibrous Begonias
The popular wax begonias and cane begonias, sometimes known as angel-wing or dragon-wing begonias, are included in this broad category of begonias that are among the most widely grown (also known as strawberry begonias). The leaves of this plant are spherical, shiny, and waxy, while the flowers are typically red, pink, or white.
Hardy Begonias
Although they self-produce from tiny bulblets that grow on the tubers, these perennial begonias are identical to tuberous begonias in appearance. In comparison to other tuberous begonias, they can reach heights of up to 2 feet and are much more cold-resistant.
Rhizomatous Begonias
A short rhizome-based root structure makes up the roots of these begonias. The leaves of the vegetation are big, serrated, and frequently quite colorful.
